About this place
Niigata lacquerware is lacquerware produced in Niigata Prefecture. Niigata lacquerware is characterized by a variety of finishes, such as take-nuri (bamboo lacquer), hana-nuri, ishime-nuri, nishiki-nuri, isokusa-nuri and kinmigaki-nuri. Among them, take-nuri, which skillfully imitates the grain and nodes of bamboo and reproduces its distinctive texture, is famous nationwide. Each finish also has its own distinctive features. It began with the introduction of Shunkei lacquer in the Genna era (1615-1624) at the beginning of the Edo period.
