Overview
A domain villa whose Kyoto-trained gardener kept the pond low, so it reads correctly from a seated eye.
About this place
Shimizu-en is a Japanese garden in Shibata, Niigata Prefecture. It was the lower residence of the former Shibata Domain in the Edo period. It is a purely Kyoto-style stroll garden incorporating the Eight Views of Omi, with a pond shaped like the character for "water" in cursive script at the center and five tea houses scattered around the pond. Within the garden there is also a simple sukiya-style study called "Shimizudani Goten," which has existed since before the garden. In 2003 it was designated a Place of Scenic Beauty of Japan under the name "Former Shibata Domain Lower Residence (Shimizudani Goten) Garden and Ijimino Ochaya Garden."
