About this place
Shiozawa Tsumugi is a silk fabric woven around Minamiuonuma, Niigata Prefecture. It uses low-luster tamaito and hand-spun floss silk thread, and is characterized by subdued colors and texture. It is a fabric that brought the traditional techniques of the hemp fabric Echigo Jofu into silk weaving, and began to be woven around the Meiwa era (1764-71). From the Taisho period its output exceeded that of hemp fabric, but with the outbreak of World War II production was restricted as a luxury. In 1949 (Showa 24) the Shiozawa Textile Industry Cooperative was founded.
