Overview
A private academy that stripped away rank, age and prior schooling at the door; five thousand students came from all Japan.
About this place
Kangien was a residential private school founded in 1805 (Bunka 2) by the Edo-period scholar Hirose Tanso in Hotta Village, Hita District, Bungo Province (now Hita, Oita Prefecture), which was shogunate territory. "Kangi" is a term taken from the Classic of Poetry, meaning "everything is good." It embodies the philosophy of respecting students' will and individuality. At Kangien, any male could enter at any time regardless of status by paying an entrance fee and filling in the required items in the register.
