About this place
Kunisaki-to is a type of hoto (treasure pagoda) distributed mainly on the Kunisaki Peninsula in Oita Prefecture. While ordinary hoto have no pedestal, the greatest external feature of Kunisaki-to is that between the base and the tower body it has a pedestal of a reverse lotus (kaeribana) or lotus seat, or in some cases both. The total number of Kunisaki-to is said to be about 500, and while they are distributed across northern and western Oita Prefecture, about 90% are concentrated on the Kunisaki Peninsula.
