Sakai mass-produced the first Japanese guns; that forging skill turned into knives, and most professional chefs' blades still come from here.
About this place
Sakai Uchihamono refers to cutlery products made by manufacturing methods using forging and sharpening techniques developed in Sakai, Osaka Prefecture, Osaka, and the surrounding area. Examples include kitchen knives and scissors. A traditional craft designated by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry. "Sakai Hamono" and "Sakai Uchihamono" are registered trademarks of the Sakai Cutlery Commerce and Industry Cooperative Federation. Forging technology is said to have come to Sakai in the 5th century, during the building of burial mounds, and from the end of the Heian period was carried on in sword making.
