Overview
Paper made from kozo alone, supplying Edo for centuries; the technique is UNESCO Intangible Heritage.
About this place
Ogawa Washi is handmade Japanese paper made in Ogawa Town, Hiki District, and Higashichichibu Village, Chichibu District, Saitama Prefecture. Also known as Hosokawa-shi. Before Hosokawa-shi was introduced, the area that is now Ogawa Town was already known as a producer of washi. With a history of 1,300 years, Hosokawa-shi, made only from kozo, is designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan. Michi-no-Eki Ogawamachi and the Saitama Traditional Crafts Hall have the "Yappashi" papermaking experience corner where visitors can try papermaking. In 2014, Hosokawa-shi was inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
