About this place
The Nagahama Hikiyama Festival is a festival held every April in Nagahama, Shiga Prefecture, and is counted as one of Japan's Three Great Float Festivals, together with Kyoto's Gion Festival and Takayama's Takayama Festival. It was designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property on 3 February 1979 under the name "Hikiyama Event of the Nagahama Hikiyama Festival." On 30 November 2016 it was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list as one of the "Yama, Hoko, Yatai, float festivals in Japan." The preservation body is the Nagahama Hikiyama Cultural Association, a public interest incorporated foundation.
