About this place
Keiunkan is a state guesthouse in Minatomachi, Nagahama, Shiga Prefecture. The garden part is designated a Place of Scenic Beauty of Japan. In 1887 (Meiji 20), it was built by the businessman Asami Matazo as a temporary residence (a facility used for temporary stays) for Emperor Meiji. The name is said to have been given by Ito Hirobumi, then prime minister. The pond-strolling garden of the main garden (Place of Scenic Beauty of Japan) is a representative work of the master 7th Ogawa Jihei and is famous as one of the masterpieces of modern Japanese gardens.
