About this place

Kogenji is a temple of the Shinshu Otani school in Dogan-ji, Takatsukicho, Nagahama, Shiga Prefecture. Its mountain name is Shiunzan. It is known for having a National Treasure Eleven-Headed Kannon statue. The Kannon statue is enshrined in the Dogan-ji Kannon Hall, which belongs to this temple. In 736 (8th year of Tenpyo), when smallpox was spreading in the capital at the time, Emperor Shomu is said to have ordered Taicho to pray to ward off the disaster. Taicho carved an Eleven-Headed Kannon, built Dogan-ji and prayed for health, long life and the prosperity of all people, after which the worries ended.
