Overview
Its slip technique resembles English country pottery; Bernard Leach came here, and the exchange went both ways.
About this place
Fujina-yaki is pottery fired in Tamayucho, Matsue, Shimane Prefecture. In the middle of the Edo period, Funaki Yojibei Muramasa opened the kiln, and quality improved under the guidance of Tsuchiya Zenshiro, who moved from the Rakuzan kiln by order of the Matsue Domain; with guidance from Matsudaira Fumai, the domain kilns of Tsuchiya and Nagahara and the folk kilns of Funaki's descendants prospered together. With the protection of the Matsue Domain, there was a division between the official kilns making tea utensils and the private kilns making miscellaneous goods for shipment on Kitamaebune ships.
