About this place
Iwami Kagura is one of the styles of Japanese kagura. It is handed down as a traditional performing art in western Shimane Prefecture (Iwami region) and northwestern Hiroshima Prefecture (northern Aki region). Taking Japanese mythology and the like as its subject matter, it has elements of theater. There are various theories on its origin, but it is said to have already been performed in the Iwami region by the late Muromachi period; it is said to have as its root Omoto Kagura, a dengaku-line kagura, and to have increased in theatricality under the influence of Izumo-style kagura (Sada Shinno), Noh, Kyogen and Kabuki, forming the present Iwami Kagura.
