About this place
Oki Kokubunji Rengee Mai is a dance of folk performing arts handed down at Oki Kokubunji in Okinoshima, Oki District, Shimane Prefecture. On May 17, 1977 (Showa 52), it was designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. This Rengee dance has been passed down by local residents at Oki Kokubunji since around the Heian period; it was temporarily interrupted by the Meiji government's suppression of Buddhism, but was revived by local residents in 1884 (Meiji 17). Today it is performed every year on April 21, the anniversary of Kobo Daishi's death.
