Overview
Said to have begun to console an exiled emperor, and still ended in a deliberate draw.
About this place
Oki no Ushizuki is bull-sumo held in Okinoshima, Shimane Prefecture. It is a unique traditional culture with a history of about 800 years, the oldest in Japan. It began when islanders held it to comfort Retired Emperor Gotoba, who was exiled to Oki after the Jokyu War. In the past, because every farm kept cattle as draft animals, each settlement in the Oki Islands had a bullfighting ring. However, in the late 1950s, with farm mechanization, draft cattle disappeared.
