Overview
Started by five young men, guided by the mingei leaders, and still making unsigned everyday ware by policy.
About this place
Shussai Kiln is a pottery in Shussai, Hikawa-cho (now Izumo), Shimane Prefecture. After the war, five young men from farming villages, second and third sons, started it as a cooperative kiln. It developed under the influence of "mingei movement" figures such as Muneyoshi Yanagi, Kanjiro Kawai, Michitada Funaki, Shoji Hamada and Bernard Leach. It still runs as a cooperative kiln today and is a standard-bearer of contemporary "mingei."
