Overview
Dancers wear heron wings in a form that died out in Kyoto and survived only here.
About this place
Sagi Mai (heron dance) is a traditional dance mainly offered at shrines of Yasaka worship. Those offered at Yasaka Shrine in Tsuwano, Shimane Prefecture, and in Kyoto are famous. The one in Tsuwano is designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan as the "Sagi Mai of Tsuwano Yasaka Shrine" (1994 (Heisei 6)). The source of Sagi Mai was an offering at the Gion Festival of Yasaka Shrine, and it is said to have as its starting point the Chinese Tanabata legend. Also, although it is called the heron dance, the "heron" is said, as the lyrics (described below) say, to be a magpie.
