About this place
Wako Museum is a museum in Yasugi, Shimane Prefecture, on wagane and tamahagane, the source of tool steel (a type of high-grade special steel) in the former Izumo-Hoki area. It opened in 1993. It has exhibits on tatara-buki, Japan's unique direct reduction method using iron sand, which is the method of producing the material of Japanese swords, as well as early modern ironmaking conditions and Japanese swords. Its establishment was planned as a project for the 2600th year of the imperial calendar, and in 1946 it opened as the "Wako Memorial Hall" attached to the Yasugi Works of Hitachi, Ltd.
