Pictures painted in coloured lacquer and covered with clear coats; as the years pass the top clears and the picture brightens.
About this place
Yakumo-nuri is lacquerware produced in Matsue, Shimane Prefecture. After the base process, without applying a middle coat, patterns are drawn with colored lacquer, mother-of-pearl, gold and silver powder, dry lacquer and so on, and clear lacquer is applied over them to finish. Its feature is that as time passes the lacquer becomes transparent and the vividly drawn patterns rise up. It was devised in 1886 (Meiji 19) by Sakata Heiichi and others, born into the family of a palanquin lacquer craftsman retained by the Matsue Domain. Heiichi inherited the house, but lost his work with the Meiji era and lived by painting and repairing rickshaws.
