About this place
Hodomura paper is a kozo paper made in Nasukarasuyama, Tochigi Prefecture. The representative paper of Karasuyama washi, it is distinctive for being so thick and strong that it is called "the treasure of thick papers." Its raw material is Nasu kozo, known for its high quality. Its origin is said to date from the Nara period, and it takes its name from the Hodomura district in the former Sakaimura of Karasuyama town, where it was produced. It has been used for building materials such as fusuma and shoji, and for important documents such as ballot papers, kaishi paper for the Imperial Palace, and Karasuyama domain notes, and today its main product is paper for graduation certificates.
