About this place
Nikko-bori is a carving specialty of Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, using dried horse chestnut, Japanese bigleaf magnolia, katsura and similar woods as material. Until around 1975 (Showa 50), horse chestnut from Tochigi Prefecture was widely used, but after that katsura from Hokkaido has been used more. In recent years, plywood is also widely used. The timber is kept at a timber yard, sawn into straight-grained boards by machine, and after natural drying (0.5 to 1 year) and electric drying (about 7 days) is supplied for Nikko-bori.
