About this place
The former Shimotsuke Rengaseizo Company brick kiln is a modernization heritage site in Nogi, Nogi Town, Shimotsuga District, Tochigi Prefecture, and is the facility used to produce red bricks. It is also called the Nogi Town Brick Kiln. It is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. In October 1888 (Meiji 21), the "Shimotsuke Rengaseizo Company" was established to manufacture red bricks. The investors were centered on Mitsui Takenosuke, Masuda Takashi and Umakoshi Kyohei of Mitsui & Co., and also included Doi Toshitomo, former lord of the Koga Domain, and Maruyama Sadanosuke, a wealthy merchant of the Koga castle town.
