Overview
Indigo leaves composted into sukumo; only a handful of makers remain, and most Japanese indigo dyeing still depends on them.
About this place
Awa-ai is indigo dyeing carried out in Tokushima Prefecture (Awa Province), or its materials, the Japanese indigo plant (Tade-ai) and sukumo (ai-dama). It flourished through the protection and encouragement policies of the Tokushima Domain and swept the Japanese indigo dyeing market. From the late Meiji period it declined under pressure from imports. In Awa Province there are records of indigo dyeing being carried out in the early Tensho era under the rule of the Miyoshi clan, but full-scale organized variety improvement and organized cultivation and processing began after the Hachisuka clan entered Awa.
