Overview
Silk dyed yellow, brown and black using only the island's own plants, from dye pot to loom.
About this place
Kihachijo is a plant-dyed silk fabric handed down on Hachijo Island. Threads dyed yellow, brown and black with the decoction of plants growing wild on the island are woven in plain or twill weave to make striped or checked patterns. Occasionally plain pieces are also dyed, but the yellow ground tends to be uneven and they rarely reach the market.
