About this place
Edo Mokuhanga refers to woodblock prints that have been made in Edo (Tokyo) since the Edo period. It is a Tokyo Metropolitan Government designated traditional craft and a traditional craft designated by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry. These woodblock prints were established with the development of ukiyo-e in the Edo period. At first they were printed in black ink only, later colored by hand, and then in the era when Suzuki Harunobu was active, the technique of multicolor woodblock printing was developed and nishiki-e were produced.
