About this place
Toyama no Baiyaku is the common name of the home-delivery medicine business long based in Toyama Prefecture (formerly Etchu Province). It is also called "Etchu Toyama no Kusuriuri." The beginning of the drug trade is said to be in the Muromachi period. In the Kofuku-ki by Nakahara Yasutomi (1455), the entry for May 2 (June 17) of 1453 reads, "We discuss the matter of the thousand-load chests of the various medicine merchants. Those who sell medicine are subject to the supervision of the Sejiin."
