About this place
Takaoka Daibutsu is a seated bronze statue of Amida Nyorai at Daibutsuji in Otemachi, Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture. Inside the pedestal there is a corridor where hell paintings and other works are displayed, and in the central room the head of the wooden Great Buddha that burned in 1900 is enshrined. The Takaoka Daibutsu can be called the crystallization of the skills of Takaoka copperware craftsmen and is a symbolic tourist spot of Takaoka. It is designated a Takaoka City Tangible Cultural Property. It is counted among the Three Great Buddhas of Japan alongside the Nara Daibutsu and Kamakura Daibutsu. It is also one of the Three Great Buddhas of Etchu, together with the Kosugi Daibutsu and the Shogawa Daibutsu.
