Overview
A single rock face eight hundred metres wide standing over the river - among the largest monoliths in Japan and a National Natural Monument.
About this place
The Kozagawa Ichimaiiwa is a giant single rock about 150 m high and 800 m wide on the left bank of the Kozagawa River in Kozagawa, Higashimuro District, Wakayama Prefecture. It is a Natural Monument of Japan. As a single rock mass it is said to be among the largest in Japan, along with Onogame (about 167 m high) on Sado Island and Chihiro Falls (about 200 m high, about 400 m wide) on Yakushima. The rock is rhyolitic tuff known as the "Kozagawa arcuate dike," and is thought to have remained without weathering or erosion because it is uniform and hard.
