About this place

Minakata Kumagusu Memorial Museum (Minakata Kumagusu Museum) is a museum in Shirahama, Nishimuro District, Wakayama Prefecture. It is a memorial museum for the world-renowned naturalist Minakata Kumagusu. It opened in April 1965 with the aim of honoring Kumagusu's achievements, preserving and exhibiting a vast body of materials such as documents, specimens, manuscripts and belongings, and promoting scholarship. Part of the collection is clearly displayed with photographs and a chronology. Seismic reinforcement of the main building and construction of a new building are under way, and the main building has been closed since November 9, 2016.
