About this place
Wakanoura is the collective name for a scenic area in the southwest of Wakayama, in northern Wakayama Prefecture. It is a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty. In April 2017 it was certified as a Japan Heritage site as "Wakanoura, a Treasure Trove of Spectacular Views." Because "Wakanoura" in address notation is read "Wakaura," local residents often use "Wakaura" for the area. In the narrow sense it refers to the sand spit connecting Tamatsushima and Katao-nami and the surrounding area, while in the broad sense it also includes Shin-Wakanoura, the fishing villages of Tano and Saikazaki across Saikayama. The name is also written as Waka no Ura.
