About this place
The Mount Haguro Five-Storey Pagoda is a five-storey pagoda built in the Muromachi period on Mount Haguro at Toge, Haguromachi, Tsuruoka, Yamagata Prefecture. The mountain ascetic training centres Mount Gassan, Mount Yudono and Mount Haguro in Yamagata Prefecture together are called the Three Mountains of Dewa. Mount Haguro has the Sanjin Gosaiden, which enshrines the gods of the three mountains, and this five-storey pagoda stands among trees partway along the approach to it. Nearby is a giant cedar called 'Jiisugi', about 1,000 years old and 10 m around its trunk. It is said to be the oldest pagoda in the Tohoku region and was designated a National Treasure in 1966 (Showa 41).
