Overview
Iron in the local clay speckles the celadon like a pear's skin - the earth itself becomes the pattern.
About this place
Hirashimizu ware is ceramics fired at Hirashimizu, Yamagata, Yamagata Prefecture. It uses raw clay from Mount Chitose, and as there is also a 'Pottery Village' at its foot, it is also called Chitose ware. Ono Tojihei (Ono Tojihei), who came from Hitachi Province in the Bunka era (1804-18) of the Edo period, is said to be the founder of the pottery, but it is also said that Ennin (Jikaku Daishi) taught the use of the clay of Mount Chitose in the Heian period.
