Overview
A former Uesugi domain kiln, revived after extinction; known for deep iron-black glazes.
About this place
Narushima ware is pottery fired in Yonezawa, Yamagata Prefecture. Uesugi Yozan, lord of the Yonezawa domain, had his retainer Sagara Seizaemon learn the techniques of Soma ware, and the kiln was opened in the first year of Tenmei (1781). It is characterised by finishing pieces only with namako glaze, black glaze and the kiln transformations produced by firing, without gorgeous painted decoration. Narushima ware flourished as the domain's official kiln and was prosperous enough to support the domain's administration, but the kiln was closed in the Meiji era. It was briefly revived in the Taisho era but closed again.
