About this place
Saiseikan is the former main building of Saiseikan Hospital in Yamagata, Yamagata Prefecture. It was established as a private hospital in 1873 (Meiji 6), and the main building was completed in September 1878 next to the prefectural office of the time. It is a National Important Cultural Property. The building itself was moved to Kajo Park in the same city and is used as the Yamagata City Museum of Local History. With the expansion of the city area through postwar mergers, population concentration and the thorough implementation of the medical insurance system, the municipal Saiseikan Hospital, which had been seeing patients in an ageing wooden building, was required to improve its medical system.
