About this place
Aramasa Shuzo Co., Ltd. is a Japanese sake brewery (sakagura) in Akita, Akita Prefecture. Founded in the 5th year of Kaei (1852), it is also famous as the birthplace of Kyokai No. 6 yeast. At its founding it was known locally as “Uhee no sake” (Uhee’s sake), after the name of its first-generation owner, Sato Uhee. It later received the name “Shinsei Kotoku” (governing anew with abundant virtue), a phrase from the Meiji government’s general policy, and under the fourth-generation owner Sato Sakichi it was shortened to “Shinsei” and read in the native Japanese way as “Aramasa.”
