About this place
Ise Shunkei is Shunkei-nuri lacquerware made in Ise, Mie Prefecture. It is also called Ise lacquerware, Yamada Shunkei and Yamada-nuri. There are now two product groups: "Orthodox Shunkei," which inherits the traditional design, and "Casual Shunkei," which uses a contemporary sense, and tea box trays, lunch boxes, kiritame-style letter boxes, pen boxes and more are produced. The base uses a single board of cypress, with plenty of red ochre (bengara) and persimmon tannin for the undercoat, and clear lacquer applied only once as a finish. For this reason the reddish-brown grain shows through.
