Overview
Lacquerware from Kiso-Hirasawa in Shiojiri. A local clay called sabitsuchi is used for the undercoat, giving a sturdy finish.
About this place
Kiso lacquerware (Kiso shikki) is lacquerware made in Kisohirasawa, Shiojiri, Nagano Prefecture (formerly Hirasawa, Narakawa Village, Kiso District) and the surrounding area. Lacquerware that descends from it is also called Yazawa lacquerware. On February 17, 1975 (Showa 50) it was designated a traditional craft by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (then the Ministry of International Trade and Industry). Kisohirasawa, the central production area, was selected in 2006 (Heisei 18) as a nationally designated Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, and the Kiso Lacquerware Festival is held every June.
