Overview
Tsuishu from Murakami. Wood is carved and then coated with layers of lacquer, bringing out the carved lines. Although it bears the name tsuishu, its method differs from that of carved lacquer.
About this place
Murakami kibori tsuishu is lacquerware made in Murakami, Niigata Prefecture. It was designated a Niigata Prefecture cultural property in 1955 and a Traditional Craft Product by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry in 1976. Temples such as Koun-ji and Ryuko-ji were built in this area from the Bunan era of the Muromachi period. Carpenters and craftsmen who came from Kyoto joined that work, which is said to be the origin of this lacquerware. Temple construction flourished when Murakami Yorikatsu was lord of the domain.
