About this place
Sakushu kasuri is a kasuri (ikat) fabric that has been made in Tomata and Kume Districts of Mimasaka Province (around Tsuyama, Okayama Prefecture). In the Tsuyama area of Sakushu (Mimasaka Province), high-quality silk fabrics had long been woven, centered on Shitori Village in Kume District (now Kuwakami and Kuwashimo in Tsuyama), Nishikiori (now Misaki, Kume District), Kuwahara in Kamo-cho, Tomata District (now Kuwahara, Kamo-cho, Tsuyama), and Ayabe in Tsuyama. Cotton cultivation began in the early 17th century, and the two came to be woven side by side.
