About this place
Yamaji Shuzo Ltd. is a sake brewery (sake maker) in Kinomoto, Nagahama, Shiga Prefecture. It stands in the former Kinomoto post town on the Hokkoku Kaido, and its main house faces west onto the Hokkoku Kaido. It was founded in the first year of Tenbun (1532). It makes sake (seishu) and kuwazake, a liqueur made with mulberry leaves; its signature sake brand is Hokkoku Kaido. Kuwazake was once made in various parts of Japan, but Yamaji Shuzo is said to be the only maker still producing it today. The representative is Yamaji Tadashi, and the proprietress is Yamaji Yuko. The toji is Senba Masayuki of the Noto toji guild.
