Overview
Shussai Kiln in Izumo. It began under the guidance of Yanagi Soetsu and others, and its potters make vessels as anonymous craftsmen.
About this place
Shussai Kiln is a kiln in Shussai, Hikawa (now Izumo), Shimane Prefecture. After the war, five young men, second and third sons from farming families, started it as a communal kiln. It developed under the influence of figures of the "Mingei movement" such as Yanagi Soetsu, Kawai Kanjiro, Funaki Michitada, Hamada Shoji and Bernard Leach. It still runs as a communal kiln today and has become a standard-bearer of present-day "mingei" (folk crafts).
