About this place
Hirose kasuri is a kasuri (ikat) fabric made in Hirose, Yasugi, Shimane Prefecture (formerly Hirose Town, Nogi District). Together with Kurayoshi kasuri and Yumihama kasuri, it is counted as one of the three picture kasuri of San'in. It is characterized by large picture patterns. It came to be made during the Bunsei era under the influence of Yumihama kasuri. It is said to have begun in 1824, when Nagaoka Sadako, the wife of a town doctor, spread dyeing techniques from Yonago (now Yonago City), and it received the protection of the Hirose domain. It was woven to designs by Horie Yusei, a painter of the domain. It was described as "Hirose for large patterns, Bingo for medium, Kurume for small."
