Overview
Unusually, the hall sits lower than the approach path. It draws prayers for safe childbirth.
About this place
Karamatsu Shrine (Karamatsu Jinja) is a shrine in Kyowa, Daisen, Akita. It is a 'lifelong guardian deity of women' and is affectionately called 'Sakai no Karamatsu-sama' as a deity of matchmaking, fertility and safe childbirth. It was a shrine revered by the Onodera and Satake clans and was known throughout the prefecture through the Karamatsu-ko confraternity. Since the medieval period, however, it had no backing from local powerful families, and in the late early-modern period it gathered worshippers almost entirely through individual effort.
