About this place
Kanmanji is a Soto sect temple in Nikaho, Akita. Its mountain name is Kogosan and its principal image is Shakyamuni Buddha. Known since ancient times as a famous temple visited by literati, in 1689 (Genroku 2) Matsuo Basho visited and introduced it in "The Narrow Road to the Deep North" with the following verse. It is said to have been founded in 853 (Ninju 3) by Ennin (Jikaku Daishi), the head of the Tendai sect. Because of the beautiful scenery of Kisakata and the legend of Empress Jingu, people divined this land by feng shui and the like, and named the temple Kogozan Kanmanju-ji.
