About this place
Hie Shrine (read Hie-jinja or Hiyoshi-jinja) is the name of shrines built across Japan by transferring the Sanno Gongen and the attendant deities enshrined at Sanno Hiyoshi Shrine (now Hiyoshi Taisha) in Otsu, Shiga. "Hiyoshi" is also written "Hie"; the older reading is "Hie", but "Hiyoshi" is also used. Hiyoshi Shrine is located at the eastern foot of Mount Hiei (Mount Hie), overlooking Lake Biwa. Oyamakui no Kami, the principal deity of the eastern Sanno (now the East Main Shrine), has long been worshiped as the local deity of Mount Hie.
