Overview
Its inner shrine stands on the summit of Mount Chokai, and which prefecture the peak belongs to, Akita or Yamagata, was disputed for a very long time. A place of worship takes shape by a logic of its own, not by administrative lines.
About this place
Chokaisan Omonoimi Shrine is a shrine in Yuza, Akumi District, Yamagata. It is an Engishiki-listed shrine (Myojin Taisha) and the ichinomiya of Dewa Province. Its former shrine rank was Kokuhei Chusha, and it is now a Beppyo Shrine of the Association of Shinto Shrines. The name Omonoimi Shrine is the collective name for the main shrine on the summit of Mount Chokai and the two guchi-no-miya (village shrines) at the foot, in Fukura and Warabioka. The shrine's sacred mountain (shintaizan) is Mount Chokai, also called Dewa Fuji or Chokai Fuji.
