About this place
Mikuni Shrine is a shrine in Sakai, Fukui. Its former shrine rank was prefectural shrine. It is regarded as a successor to the Engishiki-listed 'Mikuni Shrine of Sakai District, Echizen Province', but in fact there seems to be no continuity of worship. It enshrines Oyamakui no Mikoto (Sanno Gongen) and Emperor Keitai, and is called 'Osan no San' (Osanno-san) locally. Its annual festival, the Mikuni Festival, is designated an intangible folk cultural property of Fukui Prefecture and is counted as one of the three great festivals of Hokuriku.
