About this place
Hagaji is a Koyasan Shingon sect temple in Haga, Obama, Fukui. Its mountain name is Hojuzan. The principal image is Juichimen Kannon. According to the "Honjozan Hagaji Engi", it was founded by Gyoki in 716 (Reiki 2) by imperial order of Empress Gensho. At its peak it had 18 sub-temples, but these were washed away in a flood in 947 (Tenryaku 1), and it is said to have been revived by the monk Jozo of Ungoji (an abandoned temple that stood in present-day Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto). As with many provincial temples, the exact circumstances of its founding and its history before the medieval period are not very clear.
