About this place
Jionji is a Rinzai sect Myoshinji school temple in Gujo, Gifu. Its mountain name is Kanezan. The correct form of its temple name is Jion Gokoku Zenji. The principal image is Shakyamuni Nyorai. This temple was founded in 1606 (Keicho 11) by Endo Yoshitaka (1550 - 1632), lord of Gujo Hachiman Castle, as its founder, with Hanzan Joseki establishing it by inviting his teacher Nanka Genko as founding priest. It was at first called Jionji, and in 1738 (Genbun 3) in the Edo period it was granted the name Gokoku. A well-known head priest was Torin Soju, a dharma heir of Inzan Ien, and the teaching has been handed down since.
