About this place
Shirakawa Hachiman Shrine is a shrine in Ogimachi, Shirakawa Village, Ono District, Gifu. It is a shrine in the World Heritage village of Shirakawa-go. Shirakawa-go in the past was the whole area along the Sho River in Hida Province. In 1875 (Meiji 8), the 23 villages of 'Shimo-Shirakawa-go' north of Ogami Village (submerged by the Mihoro Dam) became Shirakawa Village, and the 18 villages of 'Kami-Shirakawa-go' south of Kaijo Village (submerged by the Mihoro Dam) became Shokawa Village (now part of Takayama). Shirakawa Hachiman Shrine was once the guardian deity of the land for all 41 villages of Kami-Shirakawa-go and Shimo-Shirakawa-go.
