About this place
Heitate Shrine, also called Heitate Jingu, is a shrine in Ono, Yamato, Kamimashiki District, Kumamoto Prefecture. It is also called Hinomiya. Its former shrine rank was district shrine. According to the shrine's records, when Takeiwatatsu no Mikoto, a grandson of Emperor Jimmu, came down to Aso, he rested here, and finding it a place with a very fine view, he set up a heihaku (offering) and worshipped the gods of heaven and earth. Afterwards, in the Engi era (901-923), the Aso high priest Tomonari built a shrine hall, enshrined the two Ise shrines and named it Heitate Shrine.
